SHARK CAGE DIVING, SOUTH AFRICA
Happy Friday! It's Jeff and this week we're diving into the shark-infested waters of Cape Town.
Diving With Great Whites
Why you should go: Staring into the eyes of an apex predator from just a few feet away is already wild. Doing it underwater takes the thrill to new levels. Sure, shark cage diving may be some people's worst nightmare, but it's also one of the most unforgettable wildlife encounters you can have—no dive experience needed. Here's a helpful video review.
Where is it: Most shark cage dives happen in Gansbaai, about a 2 hour drive from Cape Town. Tours include hotel pickup, or you can rent a car and enjoy a stunning coastal drive along the way.
Best time to visit: April to September is peak great white season, though sightings happen year-round.

What to expect: You’ll hop on a boat early in the morning, get a safety briefing, and cruise out to “shark alley.” When sharks show up, you’ll take turns in the cage, watching them glide by—sometimes really close. Wetsuits are provided, and yes, it’s cold.
How much does it cost: Expect to pay around $100–150 USD, depending on if hotel transfers and meals are included.
Best shark cage operators: I'd start by checking out highly rated Marine Dynamics. This is definitely not the tour to skimp on!
Other things to do in Cape Town:
Table Mountain – Hike or cable car your way to epic views.
Bo-Kaap – Rainbow-colored houses + spicy Cape Malay food.
Boulders Beach – Chill with real-life penguins.
Chapman’s Peak Drive – Possibly the most scenic road you’ll ever take.
Stellenbosch Winelands – Taste wine, picnic, repeat.
Pro Tip: If you’re prone to seasickness, take something before you go. - the seas can be rough.
It's true that South Africa is an adrenaline junkie's dream. But shark cage diving is accessible and fun for anyone looking for some adventure and a unique experience.
I'll be back next week with another off the beaten path destination!
See you out there - Jeff
